Well it’s been a while since our last post but I promise to make them more regular. Since the last time I wrote we have just been busy with hockey and touring around Seoul. Dustin’s team played and won the Korean cup tournament last week which was great. We all went to the final game where they won. Afterwards the team’s owner took the team, wives, girlfriends, players parents and some of his business associates all out to a traditional Korean dinner. There were about 150 people sitting at two long tables and it was a really cool experience! In the past few weeks we have celebrated Halloween, gone on some great hikes, shopped in new markets ($10 jackets AMAZING!) and gone out for a few fun nights on the town. All in all the weather has been amazing which had allowed us to spend lots of time outdoors. The guys go away again next weekend to Japan for two weeks which will be a long roadtrip but so far it seems like there will be something to do everyday with the girls. Anyhow that’s all for now. So Dustin is in China for a week. I spoke to him when he was at the airport and he told me that everyone on the plane has to wear face masks! H1N1 has been flying (pardon the pun) here and people are being extra cautious. 5 Players from the team we played last week were hospitalized after the series – scary!!! We have been here for two weeks now! Can’t believe how fast it has gone by!! I think the effects of ‘go, go, go’ are starting to catch up to us though. We are both feeling a bit under the weather but are pulling through. Over the past week we have expored new markets – Itewon, Namdemoon and Meyondong – gone hiking which was absolutly beautiful and gone for lots of walks and dinners. The guys had the weekend off which was nice but they head out on a 6 day road trip to China tomorrow! Should be pretty cool for Dustin to see China! Things are still going really well here n Korea and we are getting more comfortable here and liking it more with every passing day! It’s been a great experience but we still miss friends and family and some the events (AJ and Geoff’s big weekends! Family dinners). Anyhow, not too much to report for now – I will be posting some new pictures later on from our day in Itewon which is near the army base in Korea so there are tons of North Americans and shopping and restuarants. We went to a bar there called Rokcy Moutain where they serve Canadian beer, chicken wings and play the hockey games. There are also pictures of our hike which was awesome. So I finally posted some pics! I still have more to upload but this is a start. You will notice that they are out of order and not all are labelled – but hey, beggers can’t be choosers so just be happy that I even figured it out! Just kidding. I will work on my uploading skills. Side note: Scariest moment EVER today. After a lovely 2 hour walk along the river with Lindsay, Kelly, Ry and Beckett we were sitting outside waiting for our sushi when some lovely siren noises started screaming through the air. Not really a noise you want to hear when you are in a forgein country, where you can’t speak the language and North Korea is just above you and testing missiles for fun. Lindsay and I were trying to act all cool like it wasn’t a big deal – we didn’t see ppl running for their lives so we figured it must be ok. Well the sirens just wouldn’t stop, so at that point I decided to wander over to Starbucks (the only familiar part of South Korea) and casually ask ‘why the sirens?’ and ‘should I be running?’ they laughed at me and assured it me it was normal (matter of discretion) and it was a routine army drill. SUPER! Anyhow, now that I have aged 30 yrs I have decided to regster Dustin and myself with the Canadian embassy so that we are accounted for and on the alert list. I am sure my family will get a kick out of this but its best to prepared for ANYTHING. So we have officially been here for a week now and are finally on a normal sleeping schedule – yeah!!!!!! It’s hard to believe that’s it’s only been a week as we have already done so much. In brief – Dustin has played 3 hockey games already against a team from Japan – I have to say I was really impressed with the hockey as was Dustin (which would hold more weight as he is the subject matter expert on that one). They guys on the team are all really nice and very friendly. Yesterday was the first day off and we went to one of the outdoor market’s in Seoul – I have never seen so many ppl in my life!!! CRAZY! A few things that we are having to get use to: 1) sitting on the floor while eating (if you know Dustin and I you know that we both can’t sit on the flr cross-legged as we just don’t bend like that) 2) eating with metal chopsticks ( I wish I had packed 20 wooden sets – waaaaayyyyy better grip 3) Bowing everytime you say Hi or Bye (can make you very dizzy at times, especially after a Souju cocktail 4) Getting pushed, bumped, and shoved by little Korean ladies who can not be taller than 5ft (they are very fiesty) Other than that life here has been great. The town is very clean (ppl actually scrape the street with paint scrapers) and the ppl have all been nice. They are very health conscious here and the sidewalks all have these rubber track lanes where you can run/walk. This is my first post EVER! Dustin and I arrived in KOREA on Wednesday, October 7th. Needless to say when we arrived at the airport we were bleary eyed and out of it. We got off to a slightly rough start when no one was there to meet us at the airport at 1:30 in the morning. With no cell phone, no numbers and only the rinks address we basically just stood there staring at eachother blankly. Lucky for us a cabbie picked us out of the crowd and tried to usher us to his car. When we got it across that we had no idea where we were going he kindly showed us where an internet station was and let us use his cell phone to call Sam – the man who was suppose to meet us at the airport. All in all it worked out and a short hour later we were in Anyang and our new home. The days following have been exciting and overwhelming. Our days have been full and we have already met some GREAT friends. Today’s adventure is a hike of the mountains outside our city and our first Korean hockey game.
